Angelina Jolie has expressed that she most likely wouldn’t pursue a career as an actress if she were just starting in the entertainment industry in the present day.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, which was published online on Tuesday, the Maleficent star mentioned that she might have contemplated acting on stage but not in Hollywood.
“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” Jolie explained. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
Even though she avoids reading anything about herself in the press, the actress is aware that she’s “just been around so long, and there’s been everything said.”
Raised in the Hollywood environment with both her parents, Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, being actors, Jolie has been involved in the industry since her early years. Despite participating in projects, modeling, and studying Method acting from a young age, she acknowledged that she “was never very impressed with it [Hollywood],” adding, “I never bought into it as significant or important.”
“I grew up in quite a shallow place,” she added. “Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity.”
Upon securing her role in 1999’s Girl, Interrupted, which earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, she revealed that the subsequent fame resulted in depression and, at times, suicidal thoughts. “I wanted to escape,” Jolie said.
Throughout her career, she consistently encountered intense public scrutiny, particularly in connection to her divorce from Brad Pitt, the father of her six children, which occurred seven years ago.
Even during the filming of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in 2018, she observed the impact of stress on her body, noting that her voice had undergone a change in register compared to her first portrayal of the character in 2014. “My body reacts very strongly to stress,” explained the actress known for her role in Salt. “My blood sugar goes up and down. I suddenly had Bell’s palsy six months before my divorce.”
Jolie conceded that she doesn’t “really have a social life” in Los Angeles because every time she steps out of her house, she encounters paparazzi and unwarranted attention. This is also one of the reasons why she eventually plans to relocate.
“It’s part of what happened after my divorce. I lost the ability to live and travel as freely,” she mentioned, expressing her desire to spend more time at her home in Cambodia. “I will move when I can.”
Earlier this year, Jolie informed Vogue that she deliberately started accepting fewer film roles in recent years, opting for “only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.”
She clarified that in this current stage of life, she is “still understanding who I am at 48.
“I guess I’m in transition as a person,” she added. “I feel a bit down these days. I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way, which I don’t want to get into.”
