There was a period when Anakin Skywalker could have been portrayed by someone other than Hayden Christensen. This isn’t breaking news, as various actors were considered for the role during the filming of the prequel trilogy. However, in a recent promotion for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, actor Charlie Hunnam verified a longstanding rumor that he was among the candidates for the role of Anakin. During an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hunnam commented:
“I had forgotten that too, but yes, I did. I got to the point where I was meeting George Lucas, you know? Which… I don’t think he meets a lot of actors. I think it was probably, maybe, two to three actors they were considering. I don’t remember much about it.”
He recollected progressing far enough in the audition process to have a meeting with George Lucas. He remembered feeling anxious about sitting down with the creator of Star Wars:
“And I just remember it being a very awkward meeting and walking out and thinking, ‘Well, I’m definitely not [getting the] role.’ And I was correct. Sometimes it’s about the vibes.”
Charlie Hunnam is currently immersed in a cinematic experience reminiscent of a distant galaxy. Rebel Moon shares a connection with the Star Wars franchise, as Zack Snyder initially proposed the film to The Walt Disney Company in 2012 with the intention of it being a Star Wars movie. Snyder aimed for a darker and more mature tone, but Disney did not proceed with the project. Following further discussions and contemplation of adapting it into a television series, Rebel Moon ultimately found its place with Netflix. The movie premiered in North American theaters on December 15, 2023.
Maybe it turned out to be the ideal choice for Christensen to take on the role of Anakin Skywalker. Despite the mixed reception of the prequels among fans, there’s unanimous agreement that Christensen stood out as one of the highlights in Ahsoka. We find ourselves in the midst of the Hayden Renaissance, and I’m delighted to be part of it.
