Almost a year has passed since the last film landed on Netflix, and Rian Johnson has provided an encouraging update on Knives Out 3. Johnson introduced his murder-mystery comedy franchise with the eponymous 2019 movie, which revolves around the eccentric private detective Benoit Blanc’s investigation into the death of novelist Harlan Thrombey. The sequel, Glass Onion, takes Blanc to a private Greek island to unravel a murder mystery at a tech billionaire’s party. Both Knives Out films have garnered widespread praise from both critics and audiences, leading to Johnson’s Oscar nominations for Best Original and Best Adapted Screenplay.

In a recent interview with TheWrap, focused on his recent role as a producer, Johnson was questioned about the progress of Knives Out 3. The writer/director confirmed that he is in “full force” writing mode for the highly anticipated Netflix threequel. Additionally, he disclosed the stage of development he has reached in crafting the next enigmatic Benoit Blanc mystery. Check out what Johnson shared below:
“It’s coming along. I obviously couldn’t work during the strike, and now that it’s over, I’m diving in full force, and so it’s coming along. I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head. It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing.“
What To Expect From Knives Out 3
Considering Johnson’s anthology-style approach to the previous films, drawing inspiration from Agatha Christie’s approach to Hercule Poirot’s diverse adventures in her novels, the plot of Knives Out 3 remains a mystery at this stage. The writer/director has hinted at his intention to provide a tonally and thematically distinct chapter in Blanc’s ongoing journey, distinct from the previous two installments. However, given the comedy that contributed to the acclaim of the first two movies, it appears improbable that he would entirely depart from the genre fusion that has worked so well.
Regarding the cast of the third installment, it has been officially confirmed that Daniel Craig will reprise his role as Blanc in the upcoming movie, as part of his significant two-film agreement with Netflix, which was finalized in early 2021. While the additional cast members remain undisclosed, there is a general expectation that Noah Segan, a longtime collaborator of Johnson’s who had a different role in Glass Onion compared to the original film, will return for Knives Out 3. Fans of the filmmaker have also been advocating for Joseph Gordon-Levitt to reunite with Johnson in the next film, especially after his notable vocal appearances in the first two movies.
Before the WGA strike, Johnson had confirmed that he had already commenced writing Knives Out 3. The start of production for the third installment remains uncertain, especially as the SAG-AFTRA strike recently faced challenges, with discussions breaking down with the AMPTP. However, it will be intriguing to observe whether Johnson will achieve his desire to alter the franchise’s subtitle to “A Benoit Blanc Mystery,” as he had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the “Knives Out Mystery” label used for Glass Onion. Considering the success of Kenneth Branagh’s Poirot movies without a similar subtitle and Johnson’s track record of successful mysteries in both theaters and on Netflix, it’s possible that the streaming platform may take the filmmaker’s preferences into account and grant the desired change.
