Serena Williams has explained the reasons behind her decision to use breast milk as a treatment for her sunburn.
The ex-athlete, who welcomed her second daughter with husband Alexis Ohanian in August, posted a recent TikTok video explaining the reasons behind applying breast milk to her face.
“So I completely got burned under my eye,” said the 42-year-old, before partially explaining how she got the sunburn. “I was doing this retinol and clearing my skin. I have sensitive skin, so I was in the sun. Long story. Anyway, I’m trying some breast milk.”
Williams proceeded to demonstrate herself shaking a bottle of breastmilk, then applying a portion of it to a cloth and gently placing it under her eye.
“It works for my kid,” she clarified. “They say to put breast milk on everything, and I have a lot extra so I’m gonna try it for a week or so under my eye and see how it goes.”
Continuing to gently apply the cloth under her eye, she noted that she “already felt better,” because the sunburn “hurt”.
In the caption, the Grand Slam winner disclosed that the breast milk indeed aided in treating her sunburn. She also invited viewers to share their thoughts on her experience.
“Okay, is this totally weird??? I have to say after a week of using MY breast milk under my eye – it worked!” she wrote. “I’m dying to hear your thoughts. Be nice lol.”

Williams’ video has rapidly gained popularity, accumulating over 47,800 views as of December 5. In the comments section, numerous fans shared their suggestions for treating sunburns, and some even disclosed their successful experiences using breast milk to alleviate sensitive skin issues.
Someone suggested, “Put organic castor oil. Takes away dark circles and heals at the same time.”
Another comment read, “I gave a friend some of my breast milk to make bar soap for me to use on my son’s eczema. Was a wild concept to get my head around, but it worked!”
In the previous month, Williams used TikTok to post another candid video on motherhood. The footage depicted her in a black sequin gown with off-the-shoulder sleeves and a train at the 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards. The scene then transitioned to a shot of Williams pumping breast milk, followed by a deep sigh.
“What my life is really like…. It’s not as glamorous as you think….” she wrote in the caption.
In August, Williams used social media to share the news of the arrival of her second child. In her TikTok video, Ohanian was initially depicted looking at a computer and sitting at a table before Williams joined him. The couple was later joined by their six-year-old daughter, Olympia.
The video proceeded to depict Williams exiting the room and returning with her newborn baby in her arms. The clip concluded with a few heartwarming snapshots of the family of four. At that time, she captioned it, “Welcome my beautiful angel.”
During that period, Ohanian also posted a photo of himself and his family on Instagram to announce the arrival of the baby, disclosing the child’s name: Adira River Ohanian.

“I’m grateful to report our house is teaming with love: a happy and healthy newborn girl and happy and healthy mama,” he expressed. “Feeling grateful. @serenawilliams you’ve now given me another incomparable gift – you’re the GMOAT. Thanks to all the amazing medical staff who took care of my wife and our daughter,” he wrote. “I’ll never forget the moment I introduced @olympiaohanian to her baby sister.”
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight in November at the CFDA Fashion Awards, Williams shared how her eldest daughter is thoroughly enjoying her role as a big sister.
“She’s navigating it. She loves it,” she elaborated. “Adira’s like a tiny little baby, so Olympia just calls her her little sis.”
Williams also admitted that prior to becoming a mother of two, she had some concerns. “I was worried. I was like: ‘Okay, I don’t know if I can like anyone as much as I love Olympia,’” she shared. “I was really nervous about that. But I feel like it all worked out.”
