A driver is taking legal action against Alan Ruck, alleging that their vehicles collided on Halloween night.
Horacio Vela has lodged a complaint, as reported by PEOPLE, in Los Angeles County’s Superior Court against the 67-year-old Succession actor. The complaint alleges negligence and seeks unspecified monetary damages related to a collision that took place at the intersection of N. La Brea Ave and Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood around 9:01 p.m. on Oct. 31.
According to the complaint, Vela was driving his 2020 Hyundai Elantra at the intersection, “patiently waiting at the red traffic signal” Allegedly, Ruck, positioned behind Vela’s Elantra, “abruptly and forcefully” accelerated his 2023 Rivian R1T, resulting in a collision with the right rear bumper of the Elantra.
The complaint indicates that the force of the collision propelled Vela’s vehicle forward into the intersection, where it subsequently collided with another vehicle.
Ruck “continued driving at a high rate of speed” and executed a right turn onto Hollywood Blvd.
As per the complaint, Vela was subsequently transported by ambulance to Cedar Sinai Medical Center for the treatment of “severe injuries.” Additionally, his Elantra incurred “significant damage” and was declared a “total loss,” necessitating its removal from the scene by tow.
According to Vela’s complaint, Ruck “failed to operate the vehicle in a safe and reasonable manner,” and was “driving recklessly violating traffic rules and regulations and driving with reckless disregard” for his safety.
Due to the collision, the complaint asserts that Vela experienced “sustained serious injuries and damages, property damage, costs of past and future medical care, pain and suffering, mental anguish, emotional distress, and other consequential damages.”
A representative from the Los Angeles Police Department had earlier verified the particulars of a four-vehicle collision to PEOPLE, which culminated in Ruck’s truck colliding with Raffallo’s Pizza in Hollywood. TMZ was the initial source to break the news about Ruck’s connection to the incident.
As stated by the LAPD spokesperson, ambulances were dispatched to the Hollywood scene following the collision. The spokesperson verified the involvement of a 40-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man. Officials reported that, apart from the 40-year-old woman expressing discomfort in her arms, there were no substantial injuries resulting from the crash.
An official from the Los Angeles Fire Department informed NBC Los Angeles that a 32-year-old man was taken to a hospital following the collision. The nature and severity of his injuries, as well as his involvement in the accident, remained unclear. PEOPLE had contacted the LAFD at that time seeking a comment.
As reported by TMZ, Ruck reportedly stayed at the scene following the collision.
When interviewed by PEOPLE, the LAPD spokesperson refrained from confirming whether the incident involved a DUI or if a sobriety check took place.
Over his four-decade-long career, Ruck has featured in numerous television and film projects, such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Spin City. Earlier this year, he received a 2023 Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series for his role as Connor Roy on HBO’s Succession.
