Abel Tesfaye, known professionally as The Weeknd, has contributed $2.5 million in emergency aid to the people of Gaza in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
In October 2021, Tesfaye, who was designated as the Goodwill Ambassador for The United Nations World Food Programme, made a donation of the funds through his XO Humanitarian Fund last week.
Every donated dollar will support emergency meals for individuals experiencing crises in Gaza, facilitating the provision of 820 metric tons of food, equivalent to 4 million meals, to those in need. According to the UN, this contribution could sustain over 173,000 Palestinians for up to two weeks.

Nearly two months have passed since Israel initiated a conflict against the Gaza Strip. This has resulted in relentless bombardment by the Israel Defence Force (IDF) from land, sea, and air, along with the imposition of a siege on Gaza. The toll from these actions has been the loss of more than 14,500 Palestinian lives, including over 6,000 children, since October 7.
“This conflict has unleashed a humanitarian catastrophe beyond reckoning,” states Corinne Fleischer, the Director for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe Region at WFP.
“WFP is working round the clock to provide aid in Gaza but a major scale-up is needed to address the desperate level of hunger we are seeing.”
“Our teams need safe and sustained humanitarian access and continued support from donors to reach as many people as we can. We thank Abel for this valuable contribution towards the people of Palestine. We hope others will follow Abel’s example and support our efforts.”
For over two years, Tesfaye has served as an ambassador for the WFP, contributing to the provision of emergency food assistance for women and children in Ethiopia. Additionally, he has personally donated approximately $1.8 million to support those in need globally.
Subsequently, he has founded his own initiative, the XO Humanitarian Fund, committing to donate $1 for every concert ticket sold during his After Hours Til Dawn Tour next year.
In 2020, The Weeknd made a donation of $500,000 to organizations focused on promoting racial justice.
